The first part of the Twin Cedars Girls basketball season did not go as smooth as they wanted it to go. An early season quarantine due to COVID-19 reduced the team to just 3-4 players during practice and early season losses had the Sabers stumbling out of the gates with a 1-2 record. Coach Trent Verwers tells KNIA/KRLS Sports, the girls seem to gain a lot of confidence and realized they were able to play well in a victory over Valley Lutheran December 3rd.
Verwers:
“Things were not really working that great. I think that Valley Lutheran game we really saw a lot of improvement in that game and the score showed in that.”
The Twin Cedars Girls basketball Squad made significant improvements this season. The Sabers, for starters, more than doubled their win total from a year ago, from five last season to 11 this year, and for a few games was above the .500 mark this season. While their season did not end how the Sabers would have liked, the final regular season game will go down as the game, if not the finish of the year. With time winding down, the Sabers trailed by five points and Coach Trent Verwers witnessed the comeback of the season.
Verwers:
“I told the girl in that time out, we need to get aggressive and if you foul so be it. Kisha Reed got the deflection and Brooke Roby got the game winning layup. It was one of those moments that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives and it was a great way to send the seniors out in their last home game.”
The Twin Cedars Girls basketball Squads have been in quarantine over the break. The Sabers only have had three girls available for practice which does not make for much to do. But Coach Trent Verwers tells KRLS Sports they have had to get a little creative and work on a lot of individual parts of the game.
Verwers:
“Once break started we’ve had to quarantine our girls and we’ve had three girls all break. We’ve done all we could, there are some things you can and can’t do. Saturday is when we get everybody back so that’s when we have to get after it.”
