NASA Simulated an Asteroid Impact, Couldn t Avoid a Crash in Europe

With each passing day of the exercise, the participants learned more about the asteroid s size, trajectory, and chance of impact. Then they had to cooperate and use their technological knowledge to see if anything could be done to stop the space rock. The experts fell short. The group determined that none of Earth s existing technologies could stop the hypothetical asteroid from striking given the six-month timeframe of the simulation. In this alternate reality, the asteroid crashed into eastern Europe. As far as we know, no asteroids currently pose a threat to Earth in this way. But an estimated two-thirds of asteroids 460 feet in size or bigger large enough to wreak considerable havoc remain undiscovered. That s why NASA and other agencies are attempting to prepare for such a situation.

NASA Would Consider Nuking an Asteroid Hurtling Towards Earth, Says Agency Scientist

NASA Would Consider Nuking an Asteroid Hurtling Towards Earth, Says Agency Scientist On 4/30/21 at 12:57 PM EDT A NASA asteroid defense expert has told Newsweek that, in the event scientists spot an asteroid coming towards us with just months to spare, blowing it to pieces would not be such an outlandish idea. Thankfully, the scenario has only been lived out in the world of science fiction so far, but dangerous asteroid impacts are something scientists take very seriously in the real world. This week, NASA s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has been leading a fictional scenario in which delegates at the 7th International Academy of Aeronautics (IAA) Planetary Defense Conference have been tasked with responding to an imaginary asteroid that is due to hit Earth.
