Steuben districts receive American Rescue Plan grants

The grants to each district include: • Metropolitan School District of Steuben County, $3.165 million • Prairie Heights Community School Corporation, $1.637 million • Hamilton Community Schools, $803,332 • Fremont Community Schools, $1.068 million With the money, schools can reimburse approved expenses incurred through September 2024 that address some of the greatest challenges they continue to face as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Federal requirements say schools must use at least 20% of the money to support accelerated learning opportunities for students, as schools work to make up for instructional time lost due to COVID-19. Evidence-based interventions may include summer learning or enrichment, comprehensive afterschool programs, extended school years programs and other solutions.

Goessel School Board hears plans for summer school

Goessel School Board hears plans for summer school The Goessel school board met on April 12 and listened to kindergarten teacher Sheri Janzen describe plans for summer school. Jill Booton, who is helping Janzen plan, also attended the meeting. Five teachers plan to be involved with summer school. “Chilling at Summer School” is the theme. Popsicle and snow cones might be included as treats. Plans are for three weeks of summer school, 8-11 am for one group and from 12-3 pm for another group, four days each week, Monday through Thursday. The students will receive 33 hours of instruction, and a field trip is planned for the last day. In the past, summer school has been two weeks instead of three. Janzen talked about mixed age groups and scheduling siblings for the same session to make it more convenient for families.

Biden Must Address the Public School Mental Health Crisis Right Now The pandemic has been especially traumatic for students and, to make matters worse, school counselors that could help are in short supply. This perfect storm of disease-driven adversity underscores students’ need for mental health care. With the current unemployment rate still far above pre-pandemic levels, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, school-age students face financial instability and food insecurity. Families that already lived at the edge of a fiscal precipice are especially at risk. Meanwhile, reliance on virtual learning has challenged young people to adopt a level of self-direction that, in many cases, is far beyond their ability.

Youngstown program is more than summer school | News, Sports, Jobs

No one likes to go to summer school including, we are certain, the teachers. But Youngstown City Schools are right to offer a summer education program this year in an attempt to aid students who might have fallen behind while taking classes online during the past year. The Youngstown City School District announced recently its plans to offer a five-week in-person class curriculum available to all students from June 7 to July 9. The program will provide valuable educational opportunities, as well as offering fun and uplifting activities for our city’s kids. This program will provide all-day classes for students whether they might have struggled to complete their coursework through this pandemic year, fallen behind in their classes or simply want to participate in programs being co-sponsored by the district and community organizations.
