Both Liberal and Labor leaders have addressed the divide felt by many Australians today – as Prime Minister Scott Morrison urges people to recognise Australia Day “for better and worse” as it marks the landing of the First Fleet.
“We do it on this day when the course of this land changed forever,” he said.
“There is no escaping or cancelling that fact, for better and worse it was the moment when the journey to our modern Australia began”.
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese also addressed the hurt often felt by Indigenous Australians on this holiday, saying in the future the date could potentially be a day for a referendum for Constitutional recognition of the First Australians.

A new poll suggests the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the popularity of Ontario Premier Doug Ford.
The
poll from Abacus Data finds that 40 per cent of respondents view Ford in a positive light, a number that is down 7 points in three months. Thirty-five per cent have a negative view of the premier.
