Momen made the remark while speaking at state guesthouse Padma on Tuesday, a day after Jiming said any sort of participation in the Quad alliance would “substantially damage” bilateral relations with China.
“We are an independent and sovereign state. We determine our foreign policy. But yes, any country can present its view. We will take that into account with due respect,” Momen said.

Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming has said China is ready to help Bangladesh with more medical supplies, including medical oxygen, if the situation gets worse as it is facing the second wave of Covid-19. China is ready to offer more, if needed, he said, recalling how Bangladesh and China helped each other in dealing with the first wave of Covid-19.
He said this pandemic is a global challenge, and past experience keeps reminding us that only through cooperation within the international community we can embrace victory.

Dhaka: China has warned Bangladesh against joining the US-led Quad alliance. Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jim has warned of a major breakdown in bilateral relations.
The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, formed in 2007, is an alliance known as the Quad. The current members are India, US, Australia and Japan. China accuses them of working against them.
Lee’s statement was made at a virtual meeting organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Bangladesh. The US-led Quad Alliance was formed to counter China’s growing influence.
Weeks ago, a meeting was held between Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid and Chinese Defense Minister General Wei Feng. Wei Feng emphasized the need for the two countries to form a “military alliance” in South Asia and establish “dominance” in the region.
