Will Biden s Syria Airstrike Deter Iranian-Backed Militias in Iraq?

Biden’s decision to strike Iranian assets in Syria was the right call. On February 26, the United States carried out an airstrike in eastern Syria targeting facilities used by Iran-backed militias in retaliation for recent rocket attacks on U.S. military sites in Iraq. In the first military action taken by President Joe Biden, two U.S. Air Force F-15E aircraft fired seven missiles into a border-crossing station, destroying buildings used by Kataib Hezbollah and Kataib Sayyid al-Shudada, prominent Iran-backed Shiite militia groups in the region. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby defended the decision to strike these Syrian targets as “authorized in response to recent attacks against American and collation personnel in Iraq.”

Half a dozen of the rockets targeted residential areas, wounding four civilians. The Sec-Gen of the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs Jabar Yawar said that the operation was carried out using 108 mm rockets with a range of no more than 8 kilometers. Yawar told Asharq Al-Awsat that for the first time, these groups were able to breach the security cordon, using the open terrain surrounding the area, which made it easier for them to attack.

IDF s Kochavi positions Israel atop regional anti-Iran bloc

IDF s Kochavi positions Israel atop regional anti-Iran bloc   Miriam Alster/Flash90 IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi delivers a statement to the press on November 12, 2019. (JNS) - When assessing the comments made earlier this week by Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, who warned against the return to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, it is useful to envisage two red countdown clocks. The first is counting down the time left until Iran is able to break through to nuclear-weapons production capability. Iran does not have to build an atomic bomb to reach the status of a breakout state. It merely needs to come within striking distance - close enough that it can make the decision to take the final steps in the nuclear bomb-making process.
