Rescue personnel from all over the county descended on the Brooklyn Mine district east of Twentynine Palms Tuesday morning in an attempt to rescue a dog that had fallen down a mine shaft. The dog’s owner said he was out with his dog Sunday when the dog fell down the mine shaft. County Fire Battalion Chief Bob Evans said Urban Search and Rescue crews who are trained in those types of rescues met the dog’s owner at Highway 62 and Gold Crown Road about 8:30 a.m., and he brought them to the mine. After assessing the 300-foot mine, and the fact that the dog had been there since Sunday, rescuers determined an attempt to retrieve the dog was a lost cause. Evans reminds residents that abandoned mine sites can pose many safety hazards and to stay away.
A man was injured when he was hit by a Jeep in Twentynine Palms Tuesday afternoon. According to a Sheriff’s report, the unidentified man was in front of Starbucks at the corner of Highway 62 and Adobe Road when he was hit by the vehicle. The driver stayed at the scene and blocked the traffic lane to prevent other vehicles from hitting the man again. The man was taken by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Hi-Desert Medical Center as a precaution.

Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting in Twentynine Palms Tuesday afternoon. Deputies were called to the 5500 block of Mariposa Avenue about 3:30 p.m. for a neighborhood disturbance. Neighbors told Z107.7 News that the suspect was shooting a BB gun at the neighbors, who called for help. When deputies arrived, the suspect allegedly shot at them, who returned fire. Neither the resident nor the deputy were injured, and the suspect was then taken into custody. Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.
