Fire damages Ironwood businesses

Created: January 21, 2021 05:52 PM Several Ironwood businesses were damaged, and apartments were evacuated, as a result of a Wednesday evening fire. The fire at 135 East Ayer Street was reported at about 8 p.m.  Firefighters located fire in the basement area and brought it under control by 11 p.m. They remained on scene until about 12:45 a.m. The Ironwood Public Safety Department says two businesses received extensive fire and smoke damage and a third sustained smoke damage. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Hurley Fire Department and several other agencies also responded to the scene.

Commercial Building fire in Ironwood

ABC 10/CW5 IRONWOOD A structure fire in Ironwood damaged several businesses on Wednesday. First responders located the fire in the basement of a large commercial building on East Ayer Street at around 8 p.m. They evacuated the residents of apartments in the building. It took nearly 5 hours to fight the blaze and clear the scene, the Ironwood Department of Public Safety said. Two businesses in the building sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. A third business sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The Ironwood Public Safety Department was assisted by Xcel Energy, Beacon Ambulance, Gogebic County Victim services, the City of Ironwood Department of Public Works, the Hurley Fire Department and other law enforcement agencies.
