MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) - Scammers are focusing on a new federal program aimed at helping to pay for COVID-19 funeral costs.
The fraudsters are calling to offer help to for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Funeral Assistance Program.
FEMA said they will not contact anyone until the person has called them directly or applied for the help.
The assistance program started this week and is paying up to $9,000 in funeral assistance for people who’ve lost loved ones to COVID-19.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - FEMA is helping pay for funeral expenses of those who lost their lives to COVID-19.
The COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program opened up to applicants on Monday. This program is part of the most recent COVID-19 relief bill.
Ziemer Funeral Home President, Daniel Ziemer, knows that we arenât through this pandemic yet.
âSadly there will still be people who may lose their life due to this terrible disease,â said Ziemer.

Rutherford County, TN A Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) program launched Monday to assist with financial expenses of funerals for COVID-19 related deaths.
Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency (RCEMA) wants to inform the local community about the program.
“We recognize that our community has suffered at various lengths due to the pandemic,” said Public Safety Director Chris Clark. “ We want to make sure we’re keeping our citizens informed about available assistance programs, including FEMA’s most recent COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program.”
