Platform: Girls need an earlier diagnosis of autism

That means that for every four boys diagnosed with autism, there is one girl. What we think is that the prevalence rate is actually higher for girls and women, but that we re missing them. The diagnostic criteria used now is the same for both: social and communication difficulties; restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests; sensory sensitivities. What boys have most often, however, is a lack of motivation and the knowledge of how to communicate. Girls can mask this and compensate for it. The gold-standard tests in autism assessment are ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) and both have male-autism type in mind. ADOS, in particular, tests social and communication skills - how the person reacts to tasks, how they respond, eye contact and how they are back and forth in conversation.
