The diagnostic criteria used now is the same for both: social and communication difficulties; restricted and repetitive behaviours and interests; sensory sensitivities.
What boys have most often, however, is a lack of motivation and the knowledge of how to communicate. Girls can mask this and compensate for it.
The gold-standard tests in autism assessment are ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) and both have male-autism type in mind. ADOS, in particular, tests social and communication skills - how the person reacts to tasks, how they respond, eye contact and how they are back and forth in conversation.
