The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Perching birds, crows, blue jays, robins, cardinals, catbirds, mockingbirds and many species of sparrows, finches, flycatchers, swallows, warblers, wrens and small or medium-size hawks can be tested. Health officials advise people to be aware of birds that have been dead for less than 48 hours, a detection of single, dead birds that are scattered around, not decomposed strong odor present and no obvious cause of death.
