Family of three killed in Utica explosion hires Chicago firm to investigate incident Unmute CHICAGO (WEEK) The attorneys representing the families of the three killed in an explosion in Utica last week say they will be investigating the incident. The May 6 explosion near the Ill. Route 178 bridge near Starved Rock State Park killed family members Inmer Riveera Tejada, 39, Rafael Rivera Tejada, 36, and Guillermo Rivera Tejada, 26. A thorough and exhaustive investigation needs to be done, family attorney Tara Devine said. The families have retained the law firm Salvi, Schostok and Pritchard, P.C., based out of Chicago. In a statement sent to media outlets Wednesday, the firm says they believe there is no reason the three had anything whatsoever to do with the handling of, or knowingly using explosive devices.

The IDNR no longer opposes “trap-neuter-return” feral cat programs on land now owned, managed or leased by the agency. Ledy VanKavage, senior legislative attorney for Best Friends Animal Society, said the TNR program has the potential to save millions in taxpayer dollars. “We believe that Illinois taxpayers deserve a program that is more animal friendly, most cost-effective, and one that reduces the burden and bureaucracy on local animal shelters,” VanKavage said.

Public protection and utilities were the largest items requiring action last night for the new Jacksonville City Council. Prior to the workshop session, Ward 1 Alderwoman Darcella Speed was officially sworn in. During the workshop session, Jamie Hedden of Benton & Associates gave a second presentation concerning Town Brook Rehabilitation. Hedden said that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources had completed a study on the best solution to eliminating flooding along the Town Brook. He said that IDNR had selected a plan of replacing two culverts at the railroad spur just north of Routt Street to allow for better flow of water. The plan says that 73 structures will be removed from the 100 year flood plain and present capitalized benefits of $5.7 million dollars. The project is estimated to cost a littl
