McClugage Bridge: Project to not disturb ospreys that live atop it

PEORIA  Sometimes, construction work is for the birds. The ongoing $167 million McClugage Bridge project will replace the 70-year-old eastbound span, with the grand opening likely in late 2022. After that, the old bridge built will come down anytime after Oct. 1 of that year and definitely before March 1 of the next. Why that timetable? Ospreys.  The birds got there before construction crews and thus have first dibs on the current eastbound span. In the spring of 2019, a pair of ospreys built a nest on an easternmost post of the eastbound span. The nest remains in the same spot, which would surprise no bird-watcher: Ospreys mate for life and tend to reuse their nests year after year.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources changes policy on feral cats

Normal, IL, USA / www.cities929.com May 7, 2021 | 2:17 PM (The Center Square) – An animal rights group is applauding a policy change by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources regarding feral cats that could save taxpayers money. The IDNR no longer opposes “trap-neuter-return” feral cat programs on land now owned, managed or leased by the agency. Ledy VanKavage, senior legislative attorney for Best Friends Animal Society, said the TNR program has the potential to save millions in taxpayer dollars. “We believe that Illinois taxpayers deserve a program that is more animal friendly, most cost-effective, and one that reduces the burden and bureaucracy on local animal shelters,” VanKavage said.
