Illinois surpasses 1 4 million COVID cases

Pontiac Daily Leader On Friday, the Illinois Department of Public Health released its latest numbers heading into the weekend regarding the coronavirus situation in the Land of Lincoln. The report showed that there were 4,449 new cases that pushed the overall total to nearly 1.4 million since the pandemic began in early 2020. On Monday, the IDPH website showed that the number went past that mark and was at 1,402,763 after 817 new cases from the weekend were reported. There appears to be a rise in new cases of COVID-19 across the country as the Delta variant becomes a bigger issue, particularly to those who have yet to be vaccinated.

Pritzker announces plans to run for re-election in 2022

(The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Monday that he plans to seek re-election. In March, the billionaire Chicago Democrat donated more than $35 million to his campaign fund, so Monday’s announcement wasn’t a surprise. Pritzker’s announcement was met with criticism from Republicans seeking to unseat him in 2022. “We’ve been through a lot, and I’ve been so proud to see Illinoisans come together during the toughest of times,” Pritzker said in a Tweet on Monday. “I’m excited to fight for the state I love with @JulianaforLG, and there’s no limit to what we can do going forward.”

Districts should require masks for unvaccinated students

By Jerry Nowicki Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD The wide availability of COVID-19 vaccines has changed the state’s approach for mitigating the virus’ spread statewide and in schools. For school districts, that means suggested rather than required guidance, with an emphasis on local control in imposing mitigations. For the governor’s office, that means there are “no plans” to reinstate some of the mitigation measures and economic shutdowns that were commonplace earlier in the pandemic. “Restore Illinois mitigations that were enacted during the height of the pandemic allowed for safe and proven infection prevention measures since no vaccine was available,” a spokesperson for the governor’s office said in an email Friday. “Currently there is no plan to implement any additional mitigations now that there is an abundance of vaccine available and accessible across Illinois. We encourage all Illinoisans ages 12+ to get vaccinated as soon as possible.”
