April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month across the nation, and the Arlington Heights Police are urging drivers to drop their phones and focus on the road with a not-so-subtle reminder: Phone in One Hand. Ticket in the Other.

It has become all too common to see people driving down the road while looking at their phones, texting, and talk while driving. Not only is this dangerous and illegal, but they do it anyway, putting themselves and others at risk.
During April, you will see increased law enforcement efforts as officers stop and ticket anyone who violates distracted driving and other Illinois motor vehicle laws.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) approved its annual five-year Crossing Safety Improvement Program for implementing highway-rail safety capital projects for local roads across the state.
For fiscal years 2022-2026, the ICC plans to spend $341 million from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund or GCPF to help local communities and railroads pay for safety improvements at nearly 500 crossing locations.
The plan also allocates $78 million from the Rebuild Illinois capital program for the installation of grade crossing protection or grade separations not limited to local routes or other restrictions.

The Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded $883,000 to McLean County to upgrade stretches of two roads to handle local truck traffic.
The grant money is the first installment on more than $7 million in improvements to County Highway 24 near the Tazewell County line and Meadows Road west of Chenoa in northern McLean County. In all, 19 lane miles will be improved to become designated truck routes.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Elmhurst Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and numerous local law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Illinois to remind motorists to avoid using their phones while driving.
Over the past decade, distracted driving has become one of the leading causes of crashes on our roads. Texting while driving distracts a driver visually, manually, and cognitively.
Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes off of the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent of driving blind at 55 miles per hour for the length of an entire football field. Motorists can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones across Illinois throughout the month, and Elmhurst police will be citing drivers who are texting or using cellphones while on the road.
Illinois State Police are warning drivers to remain vigilant and drive responsibly following the second crash in two days involving a driver rear-ending an emergency vehicle with its lights activated, police said.
