Illinois State Museum Reopens January 26
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – As a result of updated COVID-19 mitigations, the Illinois State Museum (ISM) will reopen its flagship facility in Springfield and Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewistown on Tuesday, January 26, with health and safety precautions in place. The ISM Research and Collections Center, also located in Springfield, will reopen by appointment only. The ISM Lockport Gallery in Lockport remains closed under Tier 3 mitigations.
“We are thankful that we have reached this milestone and can safely reopen the Illinois State Museum and continue operating as we were in November,” said Museum Director Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko. “We have so much planned for this year – new exhibits, programs, and initiatives – and we are excited to see visitors return.”

Aaron Pearl-Cropp of Springfield admitted the odds of him finding a pennant commemorating the 1963 March on Washington, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his I Have A Dream speech, were very rare.
Pearl-Cropp, 52, a City of Springfield Public Works employee and a collector of civil rights memorabilia, said he had only seen the pennant twice, both times in museum settings, and an auction house he works with told him that it was a piece that rarely came up for sale.
But a chance conversation with a worker painting his house last summer eventually led to Pearl-Cropp landing the prize.
The Springfield Area Arts Council has announced the recipients of its 2021 Community Arts Access grants in Sangamon and Menard counties.
Sheila Walk, interim executive director of the council, said in a release that the grants are given in conjunction with the Illinois Arts Council Agency and the city of Springfield. The grants provide the opportunity for local arts agencies such as the Springfield Area Arts Council to distribute state funds in their own service areas according to local needs. The program is designed to give the community more access to the arts, especially among under-served populations.
“Giving away money to groups that share our mission to enrich the community through the arts is one of the best parts of my job,” Walk said. “Through the applications and reports, the Arts Council knows that the money is well-used.”
