Joining a bipartisan coalition of legislators and educators, I signed on to a letter to Governor JB Pritzker this past week requesting a loosening of COVID-19 restrictions at K-12 extracurricular events to allow for increasing audience capacity to 25%. While I favor much higher capacity thresholds, it was the art of compromise that allowed us to receive this sweeping bipartisan support and to communicate such unity to the governor.
The Illinois High School Association, the Illinois Association of School Boards, the Illinois Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of Athletic Directors, and Illinois Principal’s Association also signed on to the letter and support allowing 25% fan and audience capacity at extracurricular events. The letter, which contains the signature of both Republican and Democratic legislators from all corners of the state, reads in part:

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. The principal of the Thurgood Marshall Learning Center has been nominated for the award of the High School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association.
Philip Ambrose, who has served in education for 44 years and has lead the center for 15 years, was recognized by the IPA as a candidate for the award coming from the state s Blackhawk region.
The High School Principal of the Year award recognizes principals who have demonstrated a positive impact on their students and learning community. Criteria for the award include: demonstrates a positive impact on education and advocacy for children; Ensures the school climate is positive and reflects high staff and student morale; willing to take risks to improve student learning; Works collaboratively with teachers and other staff to improve the educational program and student achievement; Anticipates emerging problems and acts effectively to resolve

Gurnee, IL - The Illinois Principals Association (IPA) has selected Dr. Lisa West of Woodland District 50 as the Lake Region Elementary School Principal of the Year!
Dr. West has been part of the Woodland community for nine years. She is currently in her first year as the principal at Woodland Intermediate, and prior to that she has served as the principal at Elementary East, and three years as an assistant principal at Intermediate.
Upon receiving the news, Dr. West said, Being nominated and selected as IPA s 2020 Lake County Elementary Principal of the Year is an honor I share with all of those dedicated educators who make a difference in the lives of students each and every day.
