Nicaragua opposition ban draws international condemnation

Nicaragua opposition ban draws international condemnation by The Associated Press Last Updated Dec 22, 2020 at 3:58 pm EDT MEXICO CITY Countries and international groups around the world on Tuesday condemned a law approved by Nicaragua’s ruling party-dominated Congress that would essentially ban opposition candidates from running in the 2021 presidential elections. The law gives the government of President Daniel Ortega the power to unilaterally declare citizens “terrorists” or coup-mongers, classify them as “traitors to the homeland” and ban them from running as candidates. Given that Ortega has already applied those terms to virtually the entire opposition and the leaders of massive 2018 protests against his regime, the law approved Monday appears aimed at sweeping aside the last roadblock to Ortega continuing his lengthy rule over the Central American nation.

Nicaragua opposition figure seeks rule changes for 2021 vote

Nicaragua opposition figure seeks rule changes for 2021 vote by The Associated Press Last Updated Dec 11, 2020 at 8:26 pm EDT MANAGUA, Nicaragua Leading Nicaraguan opposition figure Juan Sebastián Chamorro expressed hope Friday that the opposition will be able to win some reforms to make the country’s November 2021 elections fairer. Chamorro, a leader of the Alianza Civica group, said he would like to “be able to force seven electoral reforms from the regime of President Daniel Ortega,” who has been in power since 2007. “If not, it will be an illegitimate process and people won’t vote,” Chamorro said. “The present conditions are very tough, and I think it will be hard to participate” in the vote unless there are changes.
