On a lazy February afternoon, I catch up with Dipankar Bhattacharya at the offices of the CPI-ML (Liberation) in central Calcutta. He is busy discussing plans for upcoming public meetings and conventions across West Bengal with a comrade of his. This includes a meeting called Ekusher Daak, Manusher Dabi which falls today, February 21; the day has been earmarked by Unesco as International Mother Language Day. On this day this year, large numbers across Bengal are expected to meet and firm up a charter that pledges to “save Bengal from the BJP’s fascist expedition”.

Over 30,000 frontline health workers were vaccinated for COVID-19 in West Bengal on Friday, taking the total number of people who got the jab to 84,505, a senior official of the health department said.
Out of the set target of 35,100 for Friday, 30,517 received Covishield doses in 351 centres across the state during the day.
Eleven cases of adverse event following immunization (AEFI), mostly minor, were reported, the official said. All the AEFI cases reported so far are doing well. The nurse who was admitted to the CCU of the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (in Kolkata on January 16) with AEFI was also discharged today, the official said.

At least 14,110 people received Covishield vaccine at the planned 207 centres in West Bengal on the second day of the vaccination programme Monday, even as 14 Adverse Event Following Immunisation (AEFI) cases were reported from different parts of the state,a senior health department official said.
The total number of beneficiaries were around 1,597 less as compared to that on the opening day of the vaccination rollout on Saturday.
Glitches in the CoWIN portal were reported from several sites, following which health officials chose to manually complete the process of documentation and allocation, a senior official of the Health Department added.
