Students experiencing discrimination and living through the pandemic have something in common: feeling isolated.
It’s a topic being explored in a paper by senior math and economics major Fiona Chen on remote learning and its effect on academic performance. Chen is using support from the MindHandHeart Innovation Fund and a
Peter J. Eloranta Fellowship to perform on a study on how Covid-19 and students’ online activities affect their productivity.
“As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, it’s difficult not to equate social distancing with social isolation, and often the loneliness that comes with our new normal,” said one of the students participating in her study. “I think it’s really important, especially as a college student, to have conversations about the effects of social isolation on our ability to learn from and connect with the people both in and outside of our virtual classrooms.”

In September of 2018, members of the Undergraduate Association of the university met with Housing and Food Services to discuss the initiative of mobile order-ahead dining at the world class university. Mobile ordering was something customers were anticipating. As the major, public, research university put together the parties to go about searching for a company to partner with to launch in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic introduced a new challenge in the requirements to speed up the roll-out of mobile ordering as new safety measures increased the need for mobile ordering to keep a safe environment on the campus. The university, which ranks in the top 1% in the world, was looking for a partner who could flex to the university’s requirements. That partner they found was Tacit. Working with Tacit, the state university’s food services officially launched the mobile order-ahead digital food app for the Fall 2020 school session.

Cynthia Barnhart SM ’86, PhD ’88 will step down from her role as chancellor and return to the faculty on July 1, President L. Rafael Reif announced today in an email to the MIT community.
During her seven years at the post, Barnhart and her team took a range of actions to make MIT a more caring environment where support is easier to find. She oversaw an expansion of student health and wellness programs, launched a campaign to prevent and respond to sexual misconduct on campus, and focused on new efforts to enhance undergraduate and graduate education.
“From the start, she has been a fearless advocate for student wellbeing, a calm, insistent force for new thinking and creative change, and one of my most trusted and thoughtful advisors,” Reif wrote to the community.
