These Two M sian Cadets Are Among Just 20 Global Applicants Accepted To U S Service Academies

Of thousands of applicants received for the Service Academy Cadets programme annually, only 10% are selected due to the highly rigorous admission process. Nicholas Ong Yong Xen, of SMK Puchong Utama (1) before joining the Royal Military College (RMC) in 2019, has been appointed to the US Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland. Ong will be studying cyber operations and is committed to becoming a navy officer with the Royal Malaysian Navy. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khairel Adha Mohd Khairee will attend the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Khairel attended SMK King Edward VII before joining the National Defense University (UPNM) for his foundation studies and will be studying Aeronautical Engineering at USAFA with hopes to become a Royal Malaysian Air Force’s fighter pilot upon completing his studies.

For Immediate Release 2021/11 PHNOM PENH, Cambodia – U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh, in partnership with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), is hosting a Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) virtual regional workshop on citizen journalism. The six-week course began on May 18, 2021. “A free and independent press is vital in a prosperous democracy,” U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy told the participants in his opening remarks. “More than ever, we need reporters and citizen journalists to hold government accountable at all levels and raise awareness of issues, challenges, and opportunities in society. I am confident this workshop will give young leaders from across Southeast Asia the skills to do that.”

An Ambassador’s Corner Commentary As 2022 ASEAN Chair, Cambodia has an opportunity to promote meaningful dialogue on key issues for ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific Thirty years ago, this October, the signing of the historic Paris Peace Agreements brought an end to decades of conflict in Cambodia.  In addition to the United States and the rest of the UN Security Council Permanent Five, signatories included all six then-members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); future ASEAN members Vietnam and Laos; Australia, China, India, and Japan; and Cambodia.  Soon after, the international community mobilized the largest peacekeeping mission ever assembled to implement the Agreements.  The peace held due to the efforts of international partners and the resilience of the Cambodian people and Cambodia has prospered.  Signifying its regional integration, Cambodia was admitted to ASEAN in 1999.  Next year, the Kingdom will Chair ASEAN for the third time.
