On Jan. 1, I.V.’s daily case rate, which shows the average number of daily confirmed cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days, was 19.7. On Jan. 22, the daily case rate was 53.7.

UC Santa Barbara has appointed Kirsten Deshler, the universityâs governmental relations director, to be its representative to the Isla Vista Community Services District following the resignation of former representative George Thurlow last December.Â
Deshler, who was appointed to the position by UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang, was sworn in at the Isla Vista Community Services Districtâs (I.V. CSD) Jan. 12 meeting.Â
Deshler declined to speak with the Nexus about her appointment to the I.V. CSD â deferring to UCSB spokesperson Andrea Estrada â but offered the following statement: âI am looking forward to working on the Board on important issues facing the Isla Vista community.â

The Isla Vista Theater, a location previously used as a pop-up testing site by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, became a permanent testing location on Jan. 8. This site will be open from 12 to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and testing will be walk-in only.Â
The testing incentive program is currently being funded by the money S.E.A.L and Civic and Community Engagement allocated for Isla Vista initiatives and by $600 from the I.V. CSDâs COVID-19 community education funds.
