Zakat fund embezzlement: HC starts hearing on Sayedee’s plea

The High Court today started hearing on a petition of convicted war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee, challenging the lower court order that framed charges against him in a case filed for embezzling Tk 1.27 crore from Islamic Foundation s Zakat Fund.
After concluding proceedings on the petition today, the HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman set February 11 for resuming the hearing.
Sayedee, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader, submitted the revision petition to the HC on February 1 seeking stay on the trial proceedings of the case.

Convicted war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayedee has filed a revision petition with the High Court challenging the lower court order that framed charges against him in a case filed for embezzling Tk 1.27 crore from Islamic Foundation s Zakat Fund.
Sayedee, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader, submitted the revision petition through his lawyer Md Muzahedul Islam Shahin yesterday (Sunday) seeking stay on the trial proceedings of the case against him.
Citing the petition, lawyer Muzahedul Islam told The Daily Star today that there is no evidence against Sayedee of transacting and embezzling any money from Islamic Foundation s Zakat Fund and there was no mention of his name in the first information report and charge sheet of the case.

A Dhaka court today framed charges against Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee and five others in a case filed for embezzlement of Tk 1.27 crore from Islamic Foundation s Zakat Fund.
Sayedee, now in jail, and four others, who are on bail at present, pleaded not guilty and demanded justice after Judge Sayeda Hosneara of the Special Judge s Court of Dhaka read out the charges to them at the makeshift court at Alia Madrasa in Bakshibazar, Old Dhaka.
The other accused are: Mohammad Lutful Haque, former director of Islamic Foundation; Mia Mohammad Yunus, chief secretary of Bandhujan Parishad; Tofazzal Hossain, former president of Islamic Social Welfare Center; and Md Abdul Haq, assistant director of Islamic Foundation s Mosque Council.
