Eden Valley Hospice, based in Carlisle, was founded 30 years ago this year. The hospice provides both end of life and respite care to people from across north Cumbria, and has been doing so since October 1991 when its Durdar Road home was built. This special anniversary comes following a difficult year for the hospice - like all charities its fundraising capacity took a significant hit through 2020 due to the disruption brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, the charity s fundraising efforts in this anniversary year are particularly important. And to mark its 30th year, the hospice has drawn up a list of suggestions on ways people can raise funds for the charity - all compliant with Covid-19 restrictions.
IT was a magical moment. Sitting silently in his wheelchair at the summit of Dodd Fell, Charles Deans gazed at a spectacular Lakeland landscape, the pale winter sunlight illuminating distant peaks as mist filled Bassenthwaite Valley below. The 46-year-old had every right to feel proud. “My wife, Sara, took the photo,” says Charles, from Wigton. “I was just sitting there, enjoying the moment. It was perfect.” In many ways, conquering Dodd Fell on December 30 last year was the perfect metaphor for the past 14 years of this man’s life a period of relentless struggle against pain and disability. A former builder and landscape gardener, he had worked six days a week, though he always enjoyed walks in the country with Sara and their daughters. “I didn’t have a lot of spare time, but loved mountain biking,” he says.
