How Local Charities Are Using Mackenzie Scott s Multibillion Dollar Donation

MacKenzie Scott’s multibillion dollar gift to nonprofits across the nation, including seven in San Antonio, all started because of a 19-year-old in Chicago. The woman wanted to help those in her neighborhood who’d lost a job during the pandemic and raised $7,000 after texting her friends about getting involved by buying supplies for those in need. Scott, the former spouse of Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos, heard about the effort and was inspired to act, she wrote in a post for Medium. Over four months, she gave $4.2 billion to 384 high-performing charities nationwide, including more than $60 million that came to San Antonio. “MacKenzie’s gift will keep us from going into debt and from having to get loans for our projects,” says Michael Guerra, chief resource officer for the San Antonio Food Bank. Each of the donations were unrestricted, meaning there are no strings attached.

Celebrate St Patrick s Day By Dining Out for Easterseals

Before the pandemic, the Easterseals Rehabilitation Center would partner with an area restaurant to host a monthly Dine Out for Easterseals giveback giving you the chance to not only help them continue to provide services to children and adults with disabilities, but also enjoy a delicious meal and support a great local restaurant. The move resulted in a hit to their bottom line, making it difficult for them to participate in the fundraising efforts of non-profits in the area. With COVID numbers decreasing in the area as more people get vaccinated, some restaurants are starting to see things turn around in terms of their profits, allowing them to once again get involved with fundraisers.

SUSIE NELSON Most people who don’t work in the nonprofit community in West Virginia are unfamiliar with the Neighborhood Investment Program. The NIP is a program of the West Virginia Development Office and provides a limited number of tax credits to nonprofit organizations to use for fundraising. Here’s how it works: Nonprofit organizations apply to the Development Office for these tax credits. Organizations that are awarded tax credits are provided a specific number of credits to use for fundraising for their approved program. Those tax credits are then given to donors (individuals or corporations) that make a gift of $500 or more to the organization for the approved program. Most participating organizations give 50% tax credits to each donor.
