House Democrats announced they would bring back earmarks that were banned in 2011 when Republicans took control of the House. Before the ban, opponents said earmarks were abused and had little oversight.
House Democrats changed the rules with the return of earmarks. Members had to make the projects public along with an explanation for each proposal, and the number of requests is restricted.

YOUNGSTOWN Eastgate Regional Council of Governments will host a series of virtual presentations on infrastructure initiatives in the Mahoning Valley for National Infrastructure Week, May 10- 14.
The daily 30-minute sessions will cover multimodal safety, environment and climate change, broadband, utilities and smart logistics.
Each session will start at noon and include brief remarks by state and federal elected representatives from the region.
The web series will be available at eastgatecog.org/infrastructureweek and also on Eastgate Council of Governments’ Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube pages.
Eastgate is the metropolitan planning organization for Mahoning, Trumbull and Ashtabula counties.
