The peaceful transition of power was a cause for celebration for elected leaders across Oregon on Wednesday, Jan. 20, as Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown highlighted the achievement of Vice President Kamala Harris the first woman, as well as the first Black and Asian person to achieve the second-highest position of power in U.S. government. Our government should be reflective of the people it represents, and now Americans across the country will see themselves in the people holding leadership positions, Gov. Brown said in a statement.

ATLANTA For some, helping to get out the vote during Georgia’s U.S. Senate runoffs meant writing checks for campaigns. Others signed up to canvass neighbourhoods or make calls for campaign phone banks. Brandon Litman took a different approach by making thousands of pieces of art to connect the Democratic candidates with voters.
The 39-year-old artist from Brooklyn, New York, packed up his spray paint and travelled to Atlanta in early December amid a critical election overtime period in Georgia. Control of the U.S. Senate was at stake in what Litman called “the most important runoff elections of our lifetimes.”

Women s march circles are taking place across the country on Saturday. Women s March Rockford is participating, too. This year, because of the pandemic, they are hosting a gathering not a march at the Women s Suffrage Centennial Sculpture. The event is in support of women s rights. Organizer Mel Champion said women and those who support women are invited to attend the goal-setting event. They re just going to write on ribbons, or postcard, what their intentions are for this year to advocate for women, and how they plan on achieving that goal, said Champion.
