If you’ve been waiting to get a vaccine, then Sunday, May 16, might be your perfect opportunity.
Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Summit County Public Health are partnering to host a vaccine clinic with 200 Johnson & Johnson doses that will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The collaboration is an attempt by officials to incentivize community members to get vaccinated.
During the event, which lasts from noon to 4 p.m., community members and visitors can get a vaccine without having to make an appointment. According to a news release
, everyone who receives a vaccine that day will receive a bloody Mary, draft beer or soda from A-Basin’s 6th Alley Bar & Grill.
Vaccines are becoming more accessible to minority populations as pop-up sites enter their communities.
Ohioans of color are not getting vaccinated at the same rates as other populations. A Kent State University geographer has found mass vaccination locations have not always been convenient for these populations.
Summit County Public Health is moving away from mass vaccination sites by adding vaccine pop-up locations in neighborhoods with dense populations who may not have access to reliable transportation. But Health Commissioner Donna Skoda notes that transportation wasn’t the only barrier these populations were facing.
“What’s interesting to us is that it’s almost like a culture of not leaving their neighborhood,” she said.

Summit County Public Health announced Wednesday morning plans to immediately begin vaccinating 12-15-year-olds once the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) approve of Pfizer s two-dose COVID-19 vaccine. In anticipation that the ACIP recommendation will be for use of the Pfizer vaccine in children ages 12-15, SCPH is providing opportunities for children ages 12-15 to be vaccinated, a representative for SCPH said in a release sent to 3News.
