Mar 13, 2021 Rec Center closing announcement/update: The Rec Center will be closing on designated dates through the end of construction; expected late summer: March 29 thru construction – Racquetball Courts CLOSED April 3 & 10 (Saturday) – hours will be 7 a.m.-12 noon April 4 – Rec Center closed for Easter holiday April 12 – Remainder of Rec Center campus CLOSED thru construction April 12-18 Fitness Equipment will be relocated to the Civic Center, 1212 N. Franklin St. April 19 – Civic Center will be open for Fitness equipment use, classes and walking Red Cross Lifeguard Training offered as blended learning course March 18-21. Completion of online work required prior to start of class. The Green Valley News provided a questionnaire to the 10 candidates for the Green Valley Recreation Board of Directors. The responses are below and have not been edited. The election began Feb. 19 and ends March 26. GVR will announce results March 31 during the annual meeting. Gary Austin I decided to become a candidate for the GVR Board because I feel neglected and ignored by the current Board. I’ll do my best to represent GVR members fairly with complete transparency. My wife and I are year-round residents of Green Valley. I retired in 2008 after a 40-year career as a custom home builder. I served on the board of several HOAs in Oregon. I was a founder and board member of a little league and coached youth sports for 15 years. I currently serve on the board of Santa Rita Church of the Nazarene.

Rowan University graduate keeps the U S Navy fit

GLASSBORO When Jess Durnian came to Rowan, she was an Exploratory Studies major. Now, the Health Promotion and Fitness Management graduate is a Moral Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Fitness Coordinator for the U.S. Navy. The former Prof women’s soccer player works at the Naval Weapons Station Earle. The station’s Mainside is located in Colts Neck and the Waterfront is in the Leonardo section of Middletown. The main duty of her job is to provide fitness and sports recreational activities to Active Duty personnel and their families. She started her career as a MWR Recreation Assistant and moved up to MWR Recreation Specialist (Facility Coordinator). Durnian was a MWR Recreation Specialist then a MWR Community Recreation Director before her current position.
