On Thursday, the Utah Wildlife Board approved a decrease in the number of general-season permits for the 2021 deer hunt. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said in a press release the reason behind the decision came down to the populations of deer in the state. The current management plan includes objectives to have just over 400 thousand deer across Utah, with an estimated 314,850 deer currently in the state, according to the DWR.

Some equipment from a wildlife guzzler was stolen in Washington County in March and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is looking to the person responsible.
The apron the large portion of the structure that collects rainwater during storm events was removed and stolen from a water guzzler near Utah Hill, a news release stated.
Guzzler aprons are made from a variety of different materials, but are typically metal. They funnel the collected rainwater or snow into a holding tank, and it is then released into a drinking area where it’s accessible to wildlife.
“Guzzler water structures are extremely important to countless Utah wildlife species because they provide critical water sources for these animals throughout the year, and particularly, during the hot and dry summer months,” DWR Sgt. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources crews shot 24,000 fish out of a tube into the Rockport Reservoir last week, the second year of Kokanee Salmon stocking in the body of water.
Chris Penne, Northern Region aquatic manager for the Division of Wildlife Resources, said the fish has become popular with anglers.
“They’re a very fun one to catch,” he said. “They’re acrobatic, leap out of the water.”
He added that Kokanee are the landlocked cousins of the iconic Sockeye Salmon famous in the Pacific Northwest, and that they taste delicious.
Penne said a rule of thumb for fish this size is about a 10% survival rate, though that might be a conservative estimate.
