The arts are a critical part of a well-rounded education. The importance of investing in creativity is well documented: studies show that students who take arts courses have higher verbal and math SAT scores, as well as gains in both critical and abstract thinking and decision-making. Anecdotally, we know how important the arts have been to weathering the pandemic. So many of us have turned to books, films, music and art to soothe, inspire and bring joy.
In 2011, UNESCO declared the fourth week of May International Arts Education Week, and since then arts and learning communities have shared the far-reaching impact that arts education has on children, their futures and our societies.
Ah, summer. No school, days spent on the beach, and nights spent eating ice cream way too close to bedtime. Summer is what every kid spends the year looking forward to (only to spend complaining they’re bored the second school gets out). But for a child with Sensory Processing Disorder, or anyone on the spectrum or with sensory issues, summer means loss of structure and routine, and the loss of therapies and support. Fortunately, if you prepare with the right tools and products, you and your kid with sensory issues can survive, and even enjoy, the summer.
The warmer weather brings with it a whole host of sensory nightmares, from the harsh sun to the fireworks on July 4 the list goes on and on. CASTLE ROCK, Colo. â Another family says Southwest Airlines refused to let them fly because their child has trouble with masks. They called corporate and it wasnât even a couple of minutes and they were like, No, kick them off, said Trent Smitley of his experience with Southwest.
Four days after our story aired, Smitley says his family had a similar experience with the same airline. Every single person knew about your story that you guys did last week and they didnât want another repeat, but yet here we are, said Smitley.
