The recently changed requirement is expected to end the domination of India’s minority Muslim community on the meat business, as authorities bowed to a longstanding demand of right-wing outfits and some NGOs who argued that a secular country like India should not endorse strict religious customs as demanded by Islamic clerics and bodies. Powerful Hindu outfit Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) also opposes exporting only halal meat.

According to an official release, the meet brought together key stakeholders from the respective Governments and trade on a common platform for strengthening strategic cooperation between India and Bhutan in Agri-Food Sector. During the virtual BSM, presentations were made by Food Corporation of Bhutan Ltd (FCBL), Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Bhutan and Trade Associations from India (Vegetables and fruits Exporters Association (VAFA), All India Food Processors Association (AIFPA), All India Meat and Livestock Exporter

NEW DELHI: The organisations, which have been campaigning against “halal” certification of meat, have welcomed the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) decision to remove the term from the specifications for export of red meat, but said this is only a first step towards the goal to ensure that meat of animals and poultry who are slaughtered in accordance with Islamic religious guidelines is not served to those who are unwilling to consume it. APEDA on Monday had announced the decision to drop “halal” from its Red Meat Manual following escalating protests from Hindutva groups and some Sikh bodies.
