Sean Murphy has a trick to getting teen boys to relax when they’re nervous about getting jabbed in the arm with a COVID-19 vaccination.
Murphy, an EMT working at the Salt Lake County Health Department’s mass-vaccination site at Sandy’s Mountain America Expo Center, goes through the standard questionnaire with each person. He runs down a list of potential health conditions, and with the boys he will pause ever so slightly when he asks: “Are you pregnant or breastfeeding?”
The question made Christopher Whitehead, a 13-year-old from West Jordan, smile and made his dad, Chris, chuckle.
Governor ends K-12 mask mandate for the final week of school

The state won’t require masks to be worn in K-12 schools during the final week of the school year, Gov. Spencer Cox announced Thursday, although he said local school districts could choose to continue the mandate put in place to stop the spread of COVID-19.
“We felt like this was a really solid compromise,” the governor said during his weekly update on the state’s efforts against the deadly virus, held at the state Capitol in Salt Lake City. Some school superintendents had sought an end to the mandate, he said.

SALT LAKE COUNTY â A member of the Salt Lake County Council is proposing an end to the countyâs mask requirements in all county facilities and programs.
Councilwoman Dea Theodore, District 6, said she feels like the pandemic is coming to an end and it is time to stop requiring masks.
âOur county health director back in April did not recommend a county-wide mask mandate. I feel it is time we are able to get rid of masks in our county facilities as well,â she said.
