Biden Says He’ll Release More Vaccine in Second-Dose Gamble

(Bloomberg) President-elect Joe Biden’s team says he’ll distribute more of the available doses of coronavirus vaccines, reversing the Trump administration’s practice of holding back the second shots needed to reach maximum potency.
The move, announced by Biden’s office Friday and supported by a group of Democratic governors, represents a gamble by the incoming administration that there will be enough vaccine available to ensure second shots after 21 days for the Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE vaccine, and 28 days for the Moderna Inc. shot.

UMass Memorial Medical Health Care said Friday that an employee who was
on the grounds of the US Capitol on Wednesday during the Trump-inspired violence that led to the deaths of five people, including a Capitol Police officer
, was no longer affiliated with the organization.
The nonprofit issued a brief statement Friday, making it the first Massachusetts company to publicly acknowledge a connection between its employees and the storming of the Capitol that delayed congressional approval of the 2020 presidential election results.

Thousands using 413Cares online portal for resources
SPRINGFIELD 413Cares.org, the community resource database for Western Massachusetts, has released data showing that thousands of residents have accessed the online database for information on services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 413Cares.org launched in November 2019, there have been 18,319 searches for services on the portal. The top search categories are housing (28 percent), food (23 percent) and health (14 percent), according to a 413Cares press release. Other program search categories include transit, goods, money, care, education, work and legal services.
More than 150 UMass Medical School students are being trained to help quickly administer COVID-19 vaccinations in Worcester.
The students are part of an effort the Worcester school detailed on Wednesday to provide the highly anticipated shots to first responders, including firefighters and police officers, as well as residential care facility residents. Chancellor Michael Collins and UMass President Marty Meehan have also advocated for similar widespread vaccination efforts statewide.
More than 30,000 vaccinations have been shipped to health facilities in Worcester County as of Dec. 31, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, enough to cover 3.6% of the county s population. That s a share of more than 285,000 doses shipped statewide. More than 78,000 shots have been administered, according to the DPH, including what Worcester city officials have said are thousands at UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital.
