Biodiversity Is Our Life Insurance

Globally 60% of all species have been lost since 1970 and yet each year we destroy more forests and dam more rivers. To call this a biodiversity crisis seems almost an understatement. This year a major United Nations meeting, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in 2021 will be held in China, aimed at trying to map a path to stopping this suicidal trend. This month Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler announced Austria had joined the so called High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People aimed at putting 30% of the earth’s surface under effective protection by 2030. Other countries in the coalition include Costa Rica, France and the United Kingdom.

Conserve 30 percent of the Earth? The number is more about politics than science

Right now, in the conservation movement, a lot of people are fixated on a single number: 30. The US and more than 50 other countries have pledged to conserve 30 percent of their land and water by 2030 as a means to help thwart the biodiversity crisis. Biodiversity tends to increase with the area of land or water conserved, yet just 16 percent of global land is in protected areas today (in the US, it’s closer to 12 percent), according to the World Database on Protected Areas. Intact ecosystems also play a major role in mitigating climate change. As conservationists have recognized the importance of protecting rich ecosystems before they’re bulldozed, drained, deforested, or abandoned, “30 by 30” has become a rallying call for the movement’s most influential organizations, political leaders, and advocates.

The 30x30 Campaign to Save the Planet From Biodiversity Threats

The ‘30x30’ Campaign to Save the Biosphere Over the past two years, an extraordinary global campaign has emerged to protect 30 percent of Earth’s total surface from human exploitation by 2030. The members of this so-called 30x30 coalition, which now includes scores of governments, understand that climate change is only one half of the planet’s environmental crisis. The Paris Agreement, while imperative to curb greenhouse gas emissions, will do little by itself to save the planet’s collapsing biodiversity or preserve the massive ecosystems upon which humanity depends and which we are fast degrading.
