MECHANIC FALLS The Town Council voted 2-2 Thursday night, stopping a public hearing on a six-month moratorium on approving commercial alternative energy facilities.
Code Enforcement Officer Alan Plummer said the Planning Board suggested the ban on facilities employing wind, solar, hydro or biomass to generate at least 125 kilowatts of electric power. Plummer said the 180-day moratorium would give the town time to write an ordinance to control siting, installation and operation of facilities.
Last month, the Planning Board approved a solar farm with 9,288 panels over nearly 10 of the 42.65 acres in a rural zone on North Street. Last year, one with 14,031 solar panels on 19.96 acres of the 37.8 acres off South Main Street/Route 11 was approved.

MECHANIC FALLS Town councilors deadlocked three times Thursday night on votes to fill a vacancy on the panel. The 2-2 tie votes means the motions failed to pass.
Norma Crabtree, Raymond Lavoie and Christopher Strout applied for the seat held by John Emery who resigned in April and passed away soon after.
State requirements did not allow the vacancy to be filled at the June 8 municipal election.
The Town Charter requires the council to appoint an interim member until the next municipal election.

MECHANIC FALLS The Town Council voted 3-1 on Monday night to name Mitchell Berkowitz, the former town manager in Bridgton, as interim town manager in Mechanic Falls.
Vice Chair Tarsha Downing and Councilors Rose Aikman and Raymond Lavoie voted for Berkowitz, while Councilor Paula Stotts voted in opposition.
Stotts said she voted against Berkowitz because in an interview last week with town councilors, Berkowitz said he would only stay in the position as interim for four months.
