PORTLAND, Maine--U.S. regulators decided Wednesday to allow American fishermen to harvest thousands of pounds of valuable baby eels in the coming years, even as authorities have shuttered the industry in Canada while they grapple with poaching.

The quota approved Wednesday will stand through at least 2027 and could be extended.

Fishermen, mostly in Maine, will be allowed to harvest a little less than 10,000 pounds of the eels per year.

Authorities in Maine say they have figured out how to regulate a fishery that is so out of control in Canada, the federal government has shut it down this year — the third shutdown in five years — putting 1,100 people out of work.
