New patent designs can never be considered final but they do give an interesting look at where a company’s ideas are going. Recently, Samsung was awarded a patent on two mixed reality (MR) headset designs as well as an unusual controller.
Spotted by Let’s Go Digital, the patents were awarded by The Hague International Design System, part of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) to Samsung Electronics last week. The most striking part of the controller design is the ring which seemingly goes over the wrist. Just like you’d find on the Oculus Touch or WMR controllers, these rings are used for tracking purposes and tend to be out front.

Samsung remains as the top mobile OEM in the world today. It was briefly overtaken by Huawei during the second quarter of 2020 but we doubt if it will happen again anytime soon. The South Korean tech giant has been working on a number of new smartphones from premium flagships to mid-rangers to budget-friendly models. The Android community is particularly anticipating for the next-gen Galaxy S21 series because it will kick off the new year especially that itis going to be introduced a month earlier than usual.

Rumor has it a Galaxy Z Fold model will also come with support for S Pen.

The patent seems to overcome the problems of poor image quality faced by current smartphones with under-display selfie cameras such as ZTE Axon 20 5G as enough light is not able to reach the camera sensor because of the display above. Samsung Electronics applied to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for a patent titled “Electronic Equipment Including Sub-Displays and Operating Methods”. This patent describes a mobile phone whose front camera can be hidden by switching the screen layering. The patent was approved and publicized on December 24. The document shows that the screen of this model also supports the use of Samsung’s S Pen for operation. In addition to the Samsung Note series, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will arrive next month with S Pen support.
According to some renders from LetsGoDigital, this device is a nearly full-screen Samsung smartphone with narrow bezels and arc boundaries. When the user does not need to take a picture, the camera and the LED flash are hidden. However, when the user requires the front camera, it can automatically switch to a high-quality lens.
