Jenna Caira was at her Canadian Tire office desk in Toronto in August 2016 when she saw an announcement that softball would return to the Olympics in 2020. The former Syracuse legend had been retired from softball for a year, but the draw of getting to pitch in the Games was pulling her back to the sport.
Seven months later, Team Canada head coach Mark Smith called Caira, wanting to know if she would be interested in returning to the national team by playing in tournaments that summer. While Caira hadn’t pitched competitively since leading Canada to gold in the 2015 Pan American Games, Smith told her returning to the pitcher’s circle is “like riding a bike.”
University baseball league to launch in Dominican Republic in August Tuesday, 2 March 2021
The Dominican Baseball Federation (FEDOBE) has announced the launch of University Baseball League to help bridge the gap to the professional ranks.
The FEDOBE said the new university league will feature 11 squads, who will compete over a three-month season.
No age limit will be in place for the competition but athletes must be active college students.
FEDOBE President Juan Nuñez said the decision to establish the league was driven by the gap between promising players leaving school and the professional game. It’s a great project, aiming to solve a years-long situation that has seen our ballplayers leaving school and university in order to pursue their dream of becoming big leaguers, Nuñez said.

WBSC reveals 2021-2029 calendar for Baseball, Softball, Baseball5 World Cups and format change 02/27/21
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) today announced the 2021-2029 Baseball, Softball and Baseball5 World Cup calendars, including a series of modifications to the competition format of some Baseball and Softball World Cups.
“The pandemic has forced us to rethink our events, innovate and be more efficient with tournament planning,” said WBSC President Riccardo Fraccari. “During 2020, working groups for baseball and softball met periodically in order to examine the WBSC competitions and make a proposal to improve them for all our stakeholders, that was approved by the WBSC Executive Committee.”
