USA TODAY The already extended game went longer than expected when Canadian coach Mark Smith pulled his team off the field in the fifth inning, protesting the umpire’s apparent decision to not let Team Canada switch pitchers. The game was paused while Smith filed a formal protest with the World Baseball Softball Confederation. Smith got the result he wanted. When play resumed, Danielle Lawrie took over in the circle in relief of Jenna Caira, who Smith had originally tried to replace before his protest. Caira had only come in during the fourth inning – taking over for starter Sara Groenewegen – but she still managed to retire four of the five batters she faced before Lawrie filled in.
