45 of the World’s best press photos from 2020 are on display
The World Press Photo Exhibition which showcases the best visual journalism of the past year will be on show at the State Library of Western Australia from July 31 to August 20, 2021.
The free exhibition presents the winners of the 2021 World Press Photo Contest.
Since 1955, the annual contest has recognised professional photographers for the best pictures presented as individual photos or stories in eight categories captured in the past year of visual journalism.
In an unprecedented year marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice protests around the globe, the winners share a diversity of interpretations and perspectives to these and other urgent issues such as the climate crisis, transgender people’s rights, and territorial conflicts.

Chris Donovan, a 2017 Loyalist College Photojournalism graduate, has won first prize in sports, stories category with the prestigious World Press Photo Foundation’s 2021 World Press Photo Contest.
Donovan earned the global recognition for his photo essay ‘Those Who Stay Will Be Champions,’ illustrating the Flint Jaguars basketball team.

He was also named a finalist for Story of the Year.
“Chris is skilled at capturing raw, poignant moments that bring social justice issues to the surface while visually illustrating the power of sport,” said Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College president and CEO in a press release Wednesday.
2021 Photo Contest and 2021 Digital Storytelling Contest headline winners announced
The World Press Photo Foundation is proud to present the winners of the World Press Photo of the Year, World Press Photo Story of the Year, World Press Photo Interactive of the Year, and World Press Photo Online Video of the Year.
The winners were announced at an online Awards Show on 15 April 2021 at 17:00 CEST. The category winners were announced on World Press Photo’s online channels on 15 April at 15:00 CEST.
