Recent surges of Covid-19 in India, South America and other regions have left people “literally gasping for breath before our eyes”, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said, warning that the pandemic is still “very much with us, thriving and mutating . From the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, I warned that no one is safe until everyone is safe….Grossly unequal access to vaccines, tests, medicines and supplies, including oxygen, have left poorer countries at the mercy of the virus,” Guterres said in his statement to the Global Health Summit on Friday.

Message : Your Excellency Alain Berset, Federal Counsellor of Switzerland, Excellencies, distinguished colleagues and friends, Lucy Nyambura is a health promotion officer in Mombasa City, Kenya. When COVID-19 arrived last year, a strict lockdown was introduced, but it was met with strong resistance by the local community, who refused to be tested, isolated or treated. As she made her daily rounds, providing information about the dangers of the new virus, Lucy was insulted in the streets and she and her team sometimes had to stop working for their own safety.
Global vaccine inequality scandalous , says WHO chief
China Daily 5/25/2021 China Daily - Europe Weekly
The head of the World Health Organization, or WHO, has called the COVID-19 vaccine crisis scandalous and warned that the world remains in a dangerous situation.
In his opening remarks to the 74th World Health Assembly on Monday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that more cases have been reported so far this year than in the whole of 2020, and that if the trend continues, the number of deaths from COVID-19 will overtake last year s total within the next three weeks. No country should assume it is out of the woods, no matter its vaccination rate, he said.
"From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I warned that no one is safe until everyone is safe..Grossly unequal access to vaccines, tests, medicines and supplies, including oxygen, have left poorer countries at the mercy of the virus," Guterres said in his statement to the Global Health Summit on Friday.
