France Wants the EU to Have More Power to Punish Big Tech

Photo: JOEL SAGET / Contributor (Getty Images) France is reportedly lobbying hard in favor of granting individual European Union member states more power to punish Big Tech when it starts acting a fool. Advertisement Companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook were first dealt a blow in December 2020, when the European Commission introduced two pieces of legislation aimed at regulating how to companies are allowed to operate within the EU. The first piece of legislation, known as the Digital Markets Act, limits self-preferencing by companies in, say, app store search results, and the second piece of legislation, known as the Digital Services Act, focuses on the creation of a single set of rules for the EU to hold companies to in an effort to keep users safe online.

Iran-Based Chat App Raychat Suffers Cyberattack

Screenshot: Gizmodo/Raychat A startup in Iran recently suffered a large data breach in which millions of its user records were exposed to the internet and then subsequently destroyed by a cyberattack involving a bot. The disruption appears to be part of an ongoing trend in which bad actors surf the web looking for insecure databases, then pounce on them to steal or destroy the data. Advertisement Raychat, which was founded in 2017, has sought to make a name for itself as a business and social messaging application. It partners with businesses and websites, which use it for sales and customer service, among other things. It was featured at Iran’s Silk Road Startup Summit several years ago, and a website that rates startups by their social engagement and other metrics lists it as one of Iran’s more popular new companies.

Twitch Bans Donald Trump Indefinitely

Photo: MARTIN BUREAU / Contributor (Getty Images) Former President Donald Trump’s part in egging on the riotous mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6 has now earned him permanent bans from Twitter, Snapchat, Shopify and, most recently, Twitch. Advertisement On Wednesday, the live streaming platform for gamers announced that after disabling Trump’s account for two weeks following the violent uprising, it had decided to make the suspension permanent in light of Trump’s departure from the White House. In an email to The Verge, a Twitch spokesperson clarified that the decision to indefinitely ban the channel had been made in part due to “the ongoing risk of further incitement of violence.”

Bumble Reenables Political Filter Used to Catch Capitol Rioters

Man, finding love sure is hard when you’re a domestic terrorist wanted for treason. Advertisement Dating app Bumble says it has reenabled a feature that lets users filter potential matches based on their political affiliations. Bumble temporarily disabled the filter for U.S. users beginning on Thursday “to prevent misuse” in the wake of several viral stories of women using the app to catfish Capitol rioters and share their candid confessions with police. Because apparently dozens of Trump insurgents who stormed Capitol Hill last week thought that bragging about violently attempting to overthrow democracy could help them land their next date.
