The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) has seen its ranks grow in 2021, with the Papua New Guinea Fishing Industry Association (PNG FIA) recently coming aboard as a funding partner and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) joining as an affiliated partner.
PNG FIA, which provides “a united voice for the fishing and associated industries in Papua New Guinea,” has been forging stakeholder partnerships on the basis of sustainability for years, according to FIA Director of Sustainability Marcelo Hidalgo. Our partnership and stakeholder engagement started in August 2018, when FIA signed and cooperation agreement (MoU) with the National Fishery Authority (NFA) of PNG to support the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fishery certification of the PNG waters,” Hidalgo said in a statement shared with SeafoodSource.

In their âStatement on Traceability and Port State Measures,â the groups call for a combination of private sector and government actions to help transform the transparency and accountability of seafood supply chains and block landings of IUU catch.
The five groups releasing the statement are Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS), the Global Tuna Alliance (GTA), the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF), the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST), and the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) Taken together, these platforms include over 150 companies from across the seafood value chain, making this one of the largest seafood industry calls for action on record.

Taking the last steps to finalise the At-Sea Operations (ASO) scope of the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI), the SSCI recently launched a second public consultation on the Social Criteria under the ASO scope. The ASO scope is the product of the ongoing collaboration between the SSCI and the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) to develop a social compliance benchmarking scheme in the seafood industry.
This consultation follows the first public consultation held on the criteria, as well as the scope’s Scheme Management Criteria, held in summer 2020. The SSCI’s At-Sea Operations Working Group then reviewed and integrated the input from this consultation; resulting in the changes to the draft Social Criteria presented during this public consultation. More details about the development of the Social and Scheme Management Criteria are available here.
