Fishing industry in UK shrank dramatically during pandemic Karen McVeigh © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Ian Rutherford/Alamy The UK suffered the largest contraction among top fishing nations during the coronavirus pandemic, according to tracking data analysed by the conservation group Global Fishing Watch. In a year of unprecedented decline, the UK and China saw the most “dramatic declines” in fishing activity undertaken within their territories, it said. In Britain, whose fishing industry was badly hit by storms in the months before the pandemic, there was a drop of 368,000 fishing hours in 2020, or 16.5% compared with 2019, while in China there was a fall of 2m fishing hours, down 13.5%. Fishing activity also decreased in Italy, Spain, France and Norway, mostly in the first months of 2020.
