Canada, Britain and the US have expressed alarm after Ottawa revealed that Hong Kong authorities forced a dual citizen to choose one nationality, enforcing what they said was a little-used regulation for the first time in decades.
Global Affairs Canada on Tuesday said that someone with a dual nationality in a Hong Kong prison was required to make a declaration of nationality on Jan. 18.
“We are aware of more such incidences involving dual nationals of other countries,” a Global Affairs Canada spokesperson said.

(CNSNews.com) – China’s hypersensitivity about the origins of the coronavirus causing COVID-19 was illustrated again at a foreign ministry briefing in Beijing this week, when a spokesman lashed out at Canada over reports claiming that a staff member at the Canadian Embassy last year ordered a custom-made T-shirt with a design supposedly linking Wuhan and bats.

A diplomatic row between China and Canada over an order of T-shirts bearing a modified logo of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan has continued, with Beijing rejecting Canada’s explanation that the shirts were not an insult linked to the coronavirus.

TORONTO, Ontario (CTV News) A dual citizen of Canada and China was taken prisoner in Hong Kong and forced to choose between their two nationalities, Global Affairs Canada says.
Declaring themselves to be Canadian could have meant losing residency in Hong Kong, while declaring themselves to be Chinese would have removed their ability to receive help from the Canadian government.
It’s not clear which choice was made in that case, but Global Affairs Canada says it’s part of a seeming pattern, with dual citizens of Hong Kong and other nations being imprisoned and told to pick one or the other.

BEIJING (AP) A ruckus brought by China over Canadian T-shirts bearing an altered logo of the New York hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan continued Wednesday, with China’s Foreign Ministry saying it didn’t buy Canada’s explanation that the shirts were not an insult linked to the coronavirus.
Canada’s Foreign Ministry said this week that the shirts using the “W” logo of the Wu-Tang Clan but with the group’s name replaced with “Wuhan” was not intended as a slight. It apologized for any misunderstanding.
