When Mrs Ukachuku Amaka, a 31-year-old mother of two, fell into labour in July, she decided to patronise a hospital close to her residence. Restriction of movement due to COVID-19 lockdown in Lagos had prevented her from going to the family hospital where she originally planned to have her baby.
“When I got to the hospital, they said they would do COVID-19 test for me. Soon, I noticed that my husband and I had been left in the labour room. The nurse told my husband that the COVID-19 test came back positive and therefore I would have to be moved to another room,” Mrs Amaka recounted.

OTTAWA The Liberal government fell woefully short in its timid response to the incarceration earlier this week of a Chinese citizen journalist who chronicled the country’s pandemic’s response, diplomatic and human rights experts say.
The criticism comes after the official twitter account for Global Affairs Canada stated briefly on Tuesday that it was “very concerned” about the incarceration of Chinese citizen journalist Zhang Zhan earlier this week. GAC has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, while the U.S., U.K. and European Union all offered full-throated and official condemnation of the conviction.
KITCHENER Most people decided to stay close to home this year, choosing to cancel or delay non-essential travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Anna Collings, who lives in Stratford and retired recently, was planning to take multiple trips this year. A mother-daughter trip to Portugal, it was going to be 10 days and we were really excited about it, but that didn t happen due to COVID, Collings said. South-Central Ontario CAA said most people have cancelled non-essential travel in 2020. The travel industry is very slow, CAA government relations director Elliott Silverstein said. Right now, Global Affairs Canada has a level-three travel advisory in effect, meaning Canadians are asked to avoid non-essential travel to all countries, including additional advisories for countries with variants of the virus like the U.K. and South Africa.

The program is directed at projects conceived and designed predominantly by local partners. Projects are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian embassy or high commission. The CFLI also serves to support positive bilateral relations between Canada and recipient countries and their civil societies, by deepening contacts and supporting local endeavours.
