The United States stands with the people of Cuba in their call for freedom and relief from the coronavirus pandemic and decades of repression, President Joe Biden said on Monday as the streets of Havana appeared quiet a day after rare public protests.
Global Affairs Canada, meanwhile, said it is
closely monitoring the situation in Cuba andÂ
concerned by recent events.
Canada supports the right to freedom of expression and assembly and calls on all parties to uphold this fundamental right, a Global Affairs spokesperson told CBC News via email.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -One of the Haitian American men arrested on suspicion of taking part in the assassination of Haiti s president last week had a prior relationship with a U.S. law enforcement agency, a U.S. government source said on Monday.
Haitian authorities last week arrested two Haitian American men, Joseph Vincent, 55, and James Solages, 35, and charged them with joining 26 Colombians in the fatal attack https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/haiti-suspects-say-they-meant-arrest-not-kill-president-report-2021-07-11 on Haitian President Jovenel Moise.
The source did not specify which of the two men had a relationship with a U.S. law enforcement agency or the nature of the relationship.
