5G trials are set to launch in Dorset which will see the county become a world leader in agri-tech and help shape the future of food production across the UK. The 5G RuralDorset project, led by Dorset Council and part-funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme, is aimed at understanding how next generation connectivity can make people live better and help create safer and more prosperous lives in rural communities. One of four key research areas within the project includes how 5G can be used to address specific challenges in food production. The agriculture and aquaculture trials, led by Wessex Internet, is the largest of its kind in the UK to date.

The Swedish telco has agreements in place with all four major operators to deploy 5G. The expansion will allow Ericsson to boost its local delivery capabilities, with plans to upgrade 20,000 network sites. Of the 800 roles, 250 of these will be directly hired by Ericsson, with the remaining roles delivered through the telco’s field and resource partners. Ericsson has invested heavily in its 5G deployment and is set to open a new 5G Centre of Excellence at its offices in Coventry by the end of the year.
