Businesses urged to apply for grants before deadline

HDC is urging businesses to apply for grants before January 31. - Credit: Archant Firms hit by the second pandemic lockdown which but missed out on a Government grant designed to help keep them in business may qualify for a cash payment after all. They have until midnight on January 31 next year to claim an Additional Restrictions Grant Extension (ARGE) payout of £2,000 from Huntingdonshire District Council to cover the effects of the second national lockdown. The grant is aimed at firms which were not eligible for the earlier Local Restrictions Support Grant and the Additional Restrictions Support Grant in areas such the events and supply chain industries.

This follows calls from local authorities, business groups and businesses themselves saying more support will be needed to help them through the loss of trade during Tier 4 restrictions. The Government made a Local Restrictions Support Grant (LRSG) available during the November lockdown for those businesses having to close due to national restrictions. This grant provided either £1,334, £2,000 or £3,000 for each 28-day qualifying period based on their premises rateable value. It is not yet known if the Chancellor will announce a new grant for Tier 4 areas as more of England enters the strictest restrictions.

When the country first went into lockdown in March the business was handed £10,000 from Tendring Council to help it overcome financial devastation caused by Covid-19. Following the most recent lockdown, additional funding was once again made available to aid the survival of Maffia’s, which Adrian applied for. Roughly three weeks on, the £1,300 top-up has failed to arrive, and Adrian, 62, has questioned why it is taking so long for funds to be distributed to businesses in need.

Lettings business criticises council for lack of support

Published: 12:40 PM December 22, 2020    A business owner has criticised North Norfolk District Council after missing out on a Covid support grant.  - Credit: Archant The co-owner of a north Norfolk holiday letting agency has hit out at what she sees as a lack of council support during the coronavirus pandemic. Penny Jones, from Sheringham-based Crabpot Cottages, said the business was losing tens of thousands of pounds as it had shut voluntarily through November and December in order to help slow the spread of the virus and support the stay local message.  But despite the financial hit they were taking, Mrs Jones said they had not been eligible for a government Local Restrictions Support Grant, which are distributed by authorities including North Norfolk District Council.
